 The first race of 2017 saw us heading to Suffolk to race with BSHRA at Rendlesham Forest where I ran in the three dog class and Matt in the two dog. We had a play around with the teams with Matt running Mars and Snik the first day then we swapped and Matt ran Mars with Kara who I had been running on the first days racing. I decided to run Cassidy Squidge in my team this weekend, she's a great little girl, bags full of drive however has an insane prey drive so I don't usually run her in lead but she worked her little fluffy socks off on both days. The first day I had a very pleasant run with my three winterdances, Laika, Cass and Kara. Matt enjoyed his run with Snik and Mars but as ever you can put as much training in as possible it really sometimes is down luck to what you meet on the trail with regards to spectators, loose dogs and other trail users which held Matt up time wise. The second day, I ran the three (pictured above) Snik, Cass and Pickle who is feeling a tad hormonal as she is coming into season and we started really great, Snik is a bit of a powerhouse and made all the difference to my usual girly team and all was going well till we met this corner which was a sharp right angle and taken at speed as it came after a fast long straight from the start, the trail was somewhat churned up from all the previous teams and I should have leaned into the corner more for balance. I took a bit of a tumble, fantastically captured by photographer Chris Wellsted who was also on hand to hold the team whilst I dusted myself off and continued on the run, dogs all fine, musher a bit bruised. Thank goodness for helmets!  A few days before the race we attended Boston Champ Show with Mars and Pickle under Siberian Husky Breed Specialist Chris Grisbrooke from the long established Azgard Kennel. We entered both into post graduate classes and we were really delighted with a first place for both dogs in their respective classes. Lots of lovely quality entries and was a very positive showcase for the breed. Despite only ever attending a handful of shows Mars was very relaxed and was a pleasure to show. Pickle was a little bit more lively and makes me work for it, but we are so very proud of how they behaved and responded to a new environment and was a great day for catching up with friends. Just loved this boys head & expression, so well balanced with a super outline when standing, correct tail set, good muscle tone, super effortless movement with plenty of reach & drive. Loved her head, correct oblique almond eyes, nice balanced outline of good proportions, level top line when standing, excellent tail set, moved well. January has been fantastic for low temps, frosty mornings, beautiful sunrises and it makes a real difference to the teams, particularly for those that are from imported lines. We are also having fun with dog admin including adding resized and double looped tugs to the new harnesses, our ganglines are all made to the George Attla dimensions so all our harnesses including tug loops we have resized to 33" and we have added a front brake to the race rig to help with control of stopping a team on the fast dryland trails.
