June - Summer begins

1/7/2013

Picture
June has been a very hot and sticky month in Somerset so the dogs have been having a bit of a break from training and have enjoyed attending local shows to raise money for charity and to give people an insight into what owning a Siberian Husky is like. Our pack is a mixture of shapes and sizes from pocket rocket Cassidy to gentle giant Hux and they all love meeting new people. We feel it is good experience for the dogs to meet different people and different breeds of dogs.

Continuing the education

As with owning any breed of dog we learn a new thing every day about the breed and our dogs and we enjoy learning everything we can. We are pleased to have picked these books up from Sally Leich who was the first person to work their siberian huskies in the UK some thirty years ago so excited about benefiting from her knowledge http://www.forstalsiberians.co.uk/

Along with several Alaskan Malamutes and other Siberian Huskies Kara Muffin attended an 'Enhance the health and performance of your Canine Athlete Seminar' to learn techniques on how to warm up and down your canine athlete before and after exercise, it was a really good day and we learnt lots of interesting info and techniques that we will add to our training, rally and show work.

The course included :

  • Discuss and learn about the movement of the dog
  • Study the relevant muscular stresses of different competitive disciplines
  • Discuss how muscular stresses can effect your dog both everyday and when competing (short term and long term)
  • Learn the tangible benefits of pre and post event massage both in performance, and preventing post event stiffness
  • Learn how to be more in touch with your dogs health and well being
  • Become familiar with relevant basic anatomy and some major muscle groups
  • Understand more clearly the positive physiological and psychological effects massage have on a dog
  • Discuss contraindications to massage
  • Practice how to use 3 appropriate massage techniques and perform an effective pre and post event massage
  • Learn how to do an effective active warm up and warm down.
